The Case For BYO Laptops

You may have noticed that the price of laptops have dropped dramatically in the last twelve months. In 2006 the base model laptop would set you back around $1000, twelve months later the price is under $600!

Is the time approaching when students will bring their own laptop to school? Should it be allowed? How would you envisage students using their own laptops at school? What about security? What about those studenst who can not afford a laptop?

Most students now bring their own data storage to school. With the advent of inexpensive flash drives, students are able to carry in their pocket more storage than the school network is able to offer! Will other technology go this way? Currently students are bound to using school PC’s on the school network and accessing the internet via our ISP. Will the future be students with their own laptop, storage and wireless internet connection - ie. totally independant of the school IT infrastructure? How will this change the way classes are run, the way students learn??

I think this is not a good idea.
Those people who can not afford to buy a laptop will feel left out and underpriveleged.

A lot of people would also steal others' laptops.
which is probably the main reason it shouldn't be allowed.

i think that the availabilt of using a computer of your own at school could be useful. however the studentc computer would of course be their own responibilty, the school can not take and actions or blame for the miss use or loosing of the computer during school. students that can not afford a computer to bring to school shuold have the computers/laptops provided to them from the school. this way the student can still be able to use the computer equaly like any other student that can afford a computer for themselves.

i think that people that have laptops should be able to bring them, and those who don't have laptops should be able to rent out a laptop for the year from the school and be able to use it.

HOWEVER, those who bring their own laptop should take full responsibility for their laptops, but like everything it has it's advantages and disadvantages.

for one, i think it would increase appreciation in society today for ist and students would be more aware of it and interested in the subject, and we wouldn't have to carry school books! i think it's important that we have basic ist skills because most jobs today require using some form of technology for whatever reason.

but on a negative point, they would be prone to stealing and getting broken.

if in the future it does turn out that way i think people should be careful and not try and intimidate others who can't afford laptops. just because you own a laptop doesn't make you any better than the rest of us...

not sure...kind of neutral on the whole thing...

laptops will most likely get ruined or lost or taken very quickly at school. its a bad i dea, and will result in chaos.

No,
i believe that if we have that if students bring their lap-tops they might get broken, stolen, hacked, etc. and thoes who do not have a lap top might feel left out.
so i think lap tops should be left at home.

i believe no. How would some one feel if they were the only person who did not have a laptop in the class. I for one would feel as though i am not a priverelged as some other people.

Another point is, if i had my own laptop at school , i would get distracted byu toehr things on the computer like looking at photos, going on the internet for myspace, bebo and going on msn. i for one want to learn and not have to worry about getting distracted from these things with just teh click of a button.

One maybe point would be the fact that you are putting these laptiops at risk of getting stolen or damged. Why spend so much money on a nice laptop for you to bring to school and drop it and damage it, someone else damange it or even worse lose it or get it stolen.

I believe we should stick to having books and use the computers when needed. Laptops are awesome to have, but only at home.

i dont think its a good idea.

people that dont have laptops would be leftout.

laptops could be stolen of brocken

many otheer school reasons.....thats why we cant bring laptops to schooll

It would kind of be unfair coz some don't have enough money to buy laptops and plus there's always the risk of losing it or getting it stolen.
However it would be more efficient.
it's a 2 sided coin.

no i dont't think we should bring laptops as it might not be fare, as some people don't have laptops and it can be stolen or brokrn etc.but maybe senior students should be allowed as they are more mature.

MOBILE COMPUTING!!!!

The advantages of laptops would be their easy and convenient to carry
and they can hold the cd versions of textbooks. They can also be like mini libaries for research- if you have a wireless card or connection to the school's internet server.

I agree with reebs that students who would like to use a laptop should be able to hire from the school but usage must be limited to school work and must be looked after properly.

The person who hires or brings their own laptop must be responsible for it. eg: not dropping orange juice on it.

But on the other hand
- I agree with anjandeep and jessica that those who arent able to purchase or bring their laptop to school would feel left out.
- Safty Reason: It might falll and break or be stolen
- It can also be a distraction to students, eg: games such as solitare
- if someone's not a fast typer, they would have an disadvataged when typing but then again when one would be typing something, they would have spell-check.

MAYBE in the future or optional for senior students and students who wont be distracted by it

i don't think that it's a good idea because, not every student owns a laptop, and then will feel left out. also studnets may steal other student's laptop, and access their lap top with out them knowing.
however if it was possibel, then every student would havce to take full responsibility for it.

=)

I think you should leave it up to the owner's of the laptop to decide if a laptop they can
they want to bring it!
They should be able to make SOME decisions on their own!

students bringing their own laptops COULD be a good idea if everyone had one, but since not every student would be able to get one it's not fair ]:

unless the government or something gives everybody one or something..
hehe, lol [:

i think its a bad idea cos if it gets stolenn ur gonna be really upset and its not the skools responseblity and also if yu drop it its not gonna be so good also ppl might not be able to afford it and may feel left outt

I do not think this is a good idea, because of the risk that comes with it.

This could be taken as theft, breakage, or discrimination for people who can not afford one/have a lower quality one (in the most watered down way possible.)

I think it is not a good idea for the school to make it either compulsory or optional, because if one of the is stolen, the school would be held responsible, and I don't think that they would particularly like that.

The same concept goes with breakage. If a student comes home with about a million pieces of a laptop, it would be safe to say their parents would be annoyed, (especially if it wasn't a cheap laptop) and the school would get even more calls than they already do.

But, if the students were confident in taking one to school, I think it would be an alright idea if they had to wait until they were seniors to do so. That way, only the serious students that continue on past year 10 would use them for their study. But I don't really think it would be nessecary for a year 7 student to have a laptop, and take it to school every day, just so they could focus on a minor assignment when the school already has computers at their disposal.

personally i think laptops should be left at home because if people start bringing them to school they might get it taken off them for taking advantage of it and not everyone has wireless internet so the laptop therefor wouldn't be useful.

parents also have a say in this and im sure 97% of parents would be against bringing laptops to school. Laptops cost a lot and are not easily replaceable.

Teachers are always saying you should spend a certain amount of time on the computer and having a laptop infront of you all day is taking advantage of that.

also if you get bumped into someone on your way to your next class you might drop the laptop, and it was your resonsibility and not the teachers.

i think it would be very useful
such as money wise u wouldn't have to buy stationary every year. And you wouldn't have to carry really heavy books or even buy a school bag for that matter, just keep all your items in the laptop bag. And with security you wouldn't need a locker anyway just keep your laptop with you at all times. Lastly it would be really convenient for the school to!
you wouldn't have to purchase text books or lockers. And there would be less grafiti on school property.

In my opinion, I think that the idea of student bringing laptops to school is both an advantage and disadvantage.
Student should be able to decided and choose whether or not they feel comfortable and desire taking their laptops to school. Students should be enabled to make their own decisions. However, students must take into consideration of the facttor that the allowing of taking valuable and personal items to school indicates full responsibility of the student and any damage or misplacement of the item is the pupil's full responsibility and no fault should be taken upon the school. But, students however can benefit from the usage of laptops for work at school.
On the other hand, students may be left feeling excluded, and may be teased of the fact that they are unable to bring and or afford to bring a laptop to school. This can leave students feeling unprivelage and disadvantaged opposed to the students who have this ability to bring laptops.
Overall, I think that the idea of students being enabled to bring laptops to school has its disadvantages and advantages to the idea. Students should be able to choose however students should know the implied rules that it is the pupil's full responsibility to take care of the items. Maybe the suggestion of senior students have the allowance of bringing their laptops should be taken into consideration upon the school.. :D

I think that this could be a revolution in the way that mc auley does their lessons. I think that all students should recieve their own laptop to do their work on.

The two main issues associated with this issue is a) what is Students dont have a laptop or can't afford one? and b) what if they get stolen.

Well if everybody can remember to the last Federal Election our new Prime Minister Mr Kevin Rudd said that he would provide every shcool student in the country with a new laptop for their computer studies.

Also if everyone has one then their would be no need for others to steal each othersit makes perfect sense. If you don't like that idea then what about the GPS chips that are installed today or having your bag checked before you leave, I mean a laptop isn't an easy thing to steal considering it is so big!

Finally i would like to say that if you want to carry around big fat boos that hurt your arms and your back, and just make life difficlut then say no but if you want to take a step into the Future then say yes! Because we are the Future!!!!!

i think that in bringing laptops to school there are the privacy problems and the problem with losing or damaging the property, of others, and that will result in extra money needed and people blaming the school etc.

although one good reason is that it will lessen up the crowds in the library computers, and therefore will provide access to the computers to the people who so not have a laptops.

however, some people may feel pretty upset that they will be left out if everyone brought their laptops and they were the only ones without ones. for eg. all your group of friends have laptops and you will be the only one without a laptop...
some people may feel like there family is poor and embarrassed about that.

overall, it's probably up to the school whether they would want to try and let students bring laptops to school and if it doesn't work out then they should stop letting them bring it to school. Sort of like a trial and error process.

i think students should not be aloud to bring laptops purley for their own sake so that it is not stollen or ruined. also it is unfair for those who can't afford a laptop to be exposed.

no its not a good idea because not everyone could afford one and it would b a distraction in in class cause it would have msn and bebo and myspace that you could go on so you would be playing games and not dopin your work so you wouldn't learn anything and i just think it wouldn't be very good. i guess it would be alright if senior students bring them becasue they are older and they would need them more for like study and stuff...
